The Vukani Mawethu Choir belts out spirituals and freedom songs in Zulu, Xhosa, Sethu and English. Intoxicating alto and tenor harmonies meld into deep bass and lyrical sopranos. Vukani Mawethu’s heartfelt repertoire of melodies grew out of centuries of struggle for emancipation. Since the Oakland based choir was first formed by the late South African activist, James Madhlope Phillips, Vukani Mawethu has devoted its music to charitable fundraising and linking people in the U.S. and abroad. The choir has performed at Zellerbach Auditorium, Nelson Mandela’s 1990 World Tour at the Oakland Coliseum and throughout the cities and townships of South Africa.
